l got my first dog a collie cross in 1986 and got hooked on Agility and Obedience. l competed with her at small local shows as well as with our club putting on displays at Fete's etc. l was soon hooked on trying to find more l could do with my dog.
Around 1991 l went to my first Dog show to watch the breed classes and decided that l wanted to know more about conformation of certain breeds, their history, working abilities and bloodlines.
lt wasn't until 2001 however that l got to pursue my ambition when my partner suggested we get another Akita as a friend for the one we already had. When l saw JJ as a puppy l set my goal of showing him and joined a local ringcraft class to learn handling skills as well as training JJ ready for going into the ring.
You make all your mistakes with your first dog and hopefully learn a lot from them, l did. We had some success at Open and Exemption shows including at the Akita association Open show at Great Barr in Birmingham.
Unfortunately, due to my own health problems, l had to stop showing JJ as an Akita was just too big and difficult for me to handle. As you can imagine, l was upset about this thinking that my brief foray into the showring may be over.
ln 2005 wanting a smaller breed l set out to buy a Poodle (just for a pet) and was lucky enough to find 'Wylderhope' Poodles in Shropshire. l went to visit and came home with Roxy my black Miniature Poodle girl. Having a few friends who had previously owned and showed Poodles l had to have thier opinion on my new baby (not that it mattered as she was the best to us!). The general comments were that l should try her in the ring as at just 8 weeks old she had some promise from what they could see and they all liked her.
Again l found a ringcraft club local to where we now lived and with Roxy in tow off we went again!
Roxy prooved to be my perfect first show poodle as though she didn't mature to be quite good enough for moving up to Championship show level she taught me a huge amount and was the perfect practice dog for handling and grooming, she is a great model! She also helped introduce me to some very experienced show breeders who pointed out that she was the perfect dog to start my own bloodline and breeding programme from if l was interested in breeding. A friend happened to call Roxy a 'Diva' one day while watching her prance around like she owned everyone, thinking 'that's my little diva' l came up with my Kennel name 'Ionadiva' (l-own-a-Diva!).
Last year 2006, Roxy gave me my first litter and her daughter Coco is now my new show prospect, l have improved on Roxy's conformation and am finally going in the right direction to achieve my ambition of producing a show winning poodle and hopefully qualifying for Crufts.
The most important thing that l will never forget though is that no matter what, l have the best dog whether the judge agrees or not!
Poodle Results
Ionadiva Coco Chanelle :- Coco
Well considering the rain showers and being ankle deep in mud, there was a fairly good turnout. Proceeds went to the Retired Greyhound Trust & Dogwatch UK. Sorry there are no pictures as l went on my own, hubby couldn't be persuaded to leave the T.V for a muddy field and soggy dogs!
Coco went with me and this being her very first show, she did me so Proud! As you can imagine, l am on cloud 9 as Coco is a puppy from my very first Poodle litter. She is 6 months & 1 week old at this show.
